Roswell, Georgia – October 2017 - - A joint prayer service between a Catholic parish and Lutheran Church will be held in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The service is planned for Wednesday October 25th beginning at 7p.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Roswell. Fr. Dan Fleming of St. Andrew will co-host the evening along with Pastor Terry Collier-Stagner of Cross of Life Lutheran Church. A dessert reception will be held along with a joint prayer service and question and answer session.
The Protestant Reformation began when German monk Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to a church door. The focus of the upcoming joint prayer service is the ongoing dialogue over the last fifty years between Catholic and Lutheran Church leaders and the commonalities between the two faiths. Pope Francis along with leaders from the Lutheran World Federation kicked off a yearlong commemoration last October in Lund Sweden. Parishes around the world followed along with similar events like the prayer service between St. Andrew and Cross of Life.
Father Dan is pleased to co host the session between the two congregations. “We are exceptionally pleased at this time in our shared history that our wo faith communities are able to provide an opportunity to gather in worship, giving thanks to God for the strides made by our denominations over the last fifty or so years, and to give mutual recognition to our many commonalities as followers of Christ. I am personally grateful to Pastor Terri Stagner-Collier for reaching out to our St. Andrew parish with the invitation to prayerfully join with her congregation for this important commemoration. It is our hope that these two gatherings of our faith communities will be the beginning of what will be many opportunities to gather and work together as the One Body, which we are called to be.”
Pastor Terry echoes the same sentiments saying she thinks it is historic that a Lutheran female pastor is welcomed at the pulpit of a Catholic Church and she is pleased the two congregations can meet to discuss what unifies them. Father Dan and Pastor Terry agree that there are more things that unite rather than divide the two faiths.
The prayer services are intended to promote ecumenical unity and bring the two faiths closer in greater recognition of our commonalities of purpose. People of all denominations, and faiths, are invited to join. St. Andrew Catholic Church is located at 675 Riverside Road in Roswell.
